All by myself

My husband, the 7th grade coach, took my oldest two kids to basketball practice this afternoon.

My youngest was left behind. This is what she thought about that.

Small Blessings

Small Undeserved Blessing 1: I asked God for some desks a few weeks ago. I keep considering homeschooling, and desks would be useful if we decide to follow that path. Anyway, the desks randomly came up in a group conversation, and a friend of mine happened to have three desks, just the right size for my three kids, to give away. I am impressed, again and again, how undeservedly the blessings fall on me.

SUB 2: I have another friend who is moving away and dropped off a box of books for me. I opened the box and was excited at the treasures it contained.

SUB3: I had time to make a quilted table runner for my table. I squeezed in a few sewing sessions and produced a table runner that I am pleased enough with to be able to look at it every mealtime. Did that make sense? If I don't do a good job on my quilts, it bugs me, and I don't want to look at it all the time. In this quilt, the corners are lined up, the points come out well, and the quilting is satisfactory, so I can place it under the glass on my kitchen table and not wince every time I look at it. This is good. You can see two of my three SUBs in the picture above.

The list goes on and on. These are all little, tiny reminders that there is Someone who cares for me and who enjoys blessing me.

Math

I like math.

I have a real math minor along with my bachelor's degree. A real one, as opposed to the one some of my friends got that was just for people in elementary education who can play with blocks to teach first graders addition but have no idea what a derivative is and think sine is "speed limit 65 mph."

Anyway, I've been having trouble lately. It's been just a few years since I've been in college, and I haven't used many complex math equations to cook meals, design rooms and houses, build and fix things, garden, teach school, take care of accounts, drive combine, buy and sell on ebay, clean my house, change diapers, shape and mold the lives of three precious children, organize Awana, work with Mothers of Preschoolers, read books, grow relationships, study the Bible, travel, scrapbook, quilt, and whatever else I've been doing for the past nine years.

I'm losing my math. I am having troubles remembering my times tables. I think the math part of my brain has been in dormancy for so long that it just shut down. The synapses just quit happening.

I have the urge to take out my math book and start studying matrices. I crave algebra. I want to relearn trigonometry. I miss that part of me. Math makes me feel smart.

But what purpose would it have? What if I knew my math? I haven't used it in the past nine years; what would the benefit be? A waste of time? Perhaps.

But I miss it.

But I feel like I'm doing more important things. I'm doing the best I can to find and follow the plan for my life, even though parts of me have to change or grow or diminish. I need to be willing to let Someone else plan my life, and I want to align the desires of my heart with the desires of His heart.
